Dance your way to a healthier you
A few months ago, I received a call from a reporter for a national news paper, who had a few questions about dance-related benefits. "Do you think Salsa helps people lose weight?" That's like asking a Buddhist if killing an ant up your trousers is justifiable homicide. I pulled over (yes, I was driving - a habit I've kicked since) and said I'd call her back. Dance has never been about fitness - it's just something I really enjoy. It struck me then - is it possible that some people join my class to shed a few pounds?
First, what are the health-related benefits of participating in a social dance like Salsa?
- The routines can burn upto 750 calories for a one-hour session
- The social interaction will boost your confidence and self-esteem
- The moves improve your coordination
- You learn good body posture and build physical endurance
- Lose weight the fun way
- Regular dancing will tone your muscles and give you a good total-body workout
- Dance is a good way to combat stress and get your mind off other things that bother you
- The uplifting beats of Latino music will leave you in good spirits, wanting more
- You get to meet some great people in a non-threatening environment
